I'm currently taking an online class in Leadership in Educational Technology and have been asked to consider my "Peer Learning Community". Technology has made the task of creating a peer learning community much easier. Since we teach such a unique type of student, there is only a small local community of adult literacy teachers, but with online connections and networking through conferences, that community has grown quite a bit for me.
One professional organization that I have been especially excited to connect with is LESLLA -- Low Educated Second Language and Literacy Acquisition. I am on the email exchange list for LESLLA and was able to attend their annual conference last year. It was really refreshing to be with a large group of researchers and teachers who "get it" and understand the type of learner that I have worked with for a long time.
I also appreciate the peer learning connections I've made online. I participated in a project adding to the OER Commons a few years ago, and made some good connections with fellow teachers through that. I also have been able to share my own materials through this website and have enjoyed many connections through this project as well.
If you have suggestions for other online or professional groups to add to our peer learning community, please share a comment below!
